Swing By Seven hailed from Sioux City Iowa
where the American Legion Hall for many years
served as a breeding ground for young punks
in western Iowa.
The band featured Joe Ross formerly of
Eclipse of Eden and Rue Morgue on drums,
Matt Lee on vocals, Matt Steinhoff on bass,
and in the beginning Keith Misery on guitar.
Eventually Keith left the band and Dave Donkey
Swing By Seven were another band that was
famous for their high energy live performances
with Joe pounding the drums and Matt Lee thrashing
about the stage like a maniac, rolling on the floor
seeming to almost swallow the microphone while
screaming his punk rock anthems. Steinhoff was
a great bass player often times with back to the crowd
legs spread, slightly crouched down in full on punk
rock stance. He moonlighted as an amateur mechanic
and always kept good rhythm. In the early years
Keith shredded the guitar with his highly technical
left handed riffing. The early sound was comparable
to a heavier At The Drive In.
Later on in the bands existaece Dave Donkey would
take over on guitar and the sound although very
similar took on more of a straight forward, heavy
riffing post punk sound. It wasn't much of a change
though and it was still the Swing By Seven
we all knew and loved.
